Our teeth are supported by the underlying bone and the surrounding periodontium consisting of the periodontal ligament.

Periodontal treatment refers to the treatment to cure periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. They are commonly known as gum disease and pyorrhea.

What is the treatment procedure for periodontal disease?

The first step includes cleaning the tooth pockets to prevent damage to the surrounding bone. The procedure involved in it is known as scaling or oral prophylaxis. In this procedure, a special dental instrument known as periodontal scalers are used to clean the adjacent region of the tooth and gums and remove all the stains and calculus present.

Sometimes a minor surgical might be necessary to cure the periodontal disease. A flap surgery may be required.

The procedures that we perform to cure any kind of periodontal diseases include scaling and root planning, oral prophylaxis, bone grafting, gum grafting, laser gum treatment, cosmetic gum surgery, crown lengthening, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gummy smile surgery and gum surgery.

Now, let us know in detail about these procedures.

Oral prophylaxis or scaling and root planning, as described above, is the first step to treat any periodontal disease. If the disease still persists, we need to go for the other procedures as required.

Bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure required if your bone is damaged or grossly resorbed. In that case, transplanted bone is used to repair and remodel damaged bone.

Gum grafting is also a minor surgical procedure done when there is a gingival recession. It is a very simple process in which the periodontist removes a portion of healthy gum tissue from the root of the mouth and places it in the region of the gum recession.

Cosmetic gum surgery is also a minor surgical procedure to take care of the cosmetic needs of your gums. Sometimes, the gum is receded and sometimes the gum covers the tooth too much. If the gum is receded, then gum grafting is the treatment of choice, whereas if the gum covers up most of the tooth crown, crown lengthening procedure is needed. Both these procedures are done as a cosmetic cure, to make your teeth and gums look perfect.

Crown lengthening is a minor surgical process in which the extra portion of the gums covering the tooth is cut off, thus exposing more of the tooth crown.

Gingivectomy and gingivoplasty are both minor surgical procedures in which gum tissue is removed. In gingivectomy, the diseased gum tissues are removed surgically, thus leaving behind healthy gums. If the gingivitis can not be cured by means of non-invasive procedures like oral prophylaxis, in that case gingivectomy becomes the treatment of choice.

Gingivoplasty involves reshaping your gum tissues in order to make them look better.

Gum surgery involves lifting up your gums a little, cleaning underneath and again suturing it back to the original place.

At our clinic, we use lasers for the gum treatment which not only reduces the operating time but also has a better prognosis.
